Successful protein shake

In a previous post I shared my frustration with coming up with a good protein shake. Marie Hughes came to the rescue and gave me a great tip about how to improve my protein shakes, namely adding water and ice in equal amounts. I tried it and it worked, thanks Marie !

I blended the following ingredients together:

  • 2 cups hemp milk
  • 2 heaping tbsp rice powder
  • 10 cubes of ice
  • 1 tsp of honey
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla

The end result was two full glasses of 13g of protein each, not a lot but still something. It tasted decent, not too sweet , and it had no grit. One final trick was to let is sit at the end and then shake it a bit, this way it became nice and smooth.

Starting Protein Shakes

Since the beginning of the year I have managed to gain only 2 pounds, so I’m changing things up a bit. For speeding up my weight gaining experience I am supplementing now with protein shakes. Making a decent protein shake is a challenge, at least to me. I would love to hear your feedback on how to create the perfect protein shake. My two factors for judging a shake are taste and grit.

Taste

  • Not too sweet
  • Not too bland
  • It is easy to have a full glass of it

Grit

Grit seems to be a major issue currently. It seems to help a bit to overblend it but it would be great to find a powder which I can prepare at work as well, where I don’t have a high speed blender.

Winner

Currently I have one shake which I think is quite good, but I’d love to have some variety.

  • 1 heaping tablespoon Rice Protein from NutriBiotic (12g protein), coconut water from one young thai coconut
    • This simple combination is the winner for now. It works great with/without adding the coconut meat.
    • I am having this twice a day, which gives me about 25g of protein. This is still not much, I would like to get 50g of protein from shakes, as my protein intake from regular food is not big.

Losers

  • Hemp protein  + orange juice
    • It was way to sweet, I couldn’t chuck it down.
  • Hemp protein + coconut milk + vanilla + pinch salt
    • It was too thick and creamy
  • Rice protein + stevia  + vanilla  + water
    • I tried this at work without a blender. I just used a spoon to mix it all together and it tasted awful. It was also very gritty, the rice protein just didn’t dissolve.

No whey, no soy

Milk and soy are highly allergenic food items. I try to stay away from them as much as possible. Any protein shake shouldn’t contain any of these ingredients.

Do you have a protein shake you like? Please post it as a comment. I would love to try it and give you feedback on it.

After 5 days my current weight is 133.5 lbs 9% body fat. This might be also due to dehydration but currently I think it is too early to tell. Anyways I haven’t yet made progress going in the right direction as far as weight is concerned. Experiment “20lbs more” – Day 1

Today I’m starting an experiment where the goal it to gain 20lbs. I also want to gain this weight in a healthy way, that is not to harm my body. One way to achieve this goal is to just eat a few pounds of sugar every day. That would probably get me the 20lbs in a short amount of time and probably give me diabetes along the way as well . I consider that cheating and during this experiment I will continue what I’m doing now, that is not eat refined carbohydrates which includes high fructose corn syrup, white sugar, white flour, white rice etc. Read More »
